If you drive on a regular basis then you will probably have noticed that it is costing you more to fill up on each occasion that you run low on petrol or diesel; and with the effects of the credit crunch in recent times, this is something you don’t want to be doing too frequently. But, while you need to use the car for some reason or another – whether it is for work or perhaps to do the shopping – there are always ways you can reduce the number of times you need to fill up.

For example, you might use your car regularly but how often do you check the tyres? The truth is that if they aren’t pumped up correctly, they could be costing you more in fuel than they should be. It may sound as an unusual effect but it is one of those things that many people don’t realise, and yet when combined with other fuel saving measures it can contribute to making a significant difference.

Another way to cut costs is to do your homework when it comes to knowing where to purchase your fuel. Although prices can and do change quite regularly, you will normally find that there are places local to you that always tend to be cheaper than the rest. Therefore, get to know who charges what; and you could be saving yourself more in the long run.

Of course, it is important to adhere to the speed limit for safety’s sake in addition to following the law, but it can save you a lot of money as well. It is important to know that as soon as you go over the national speed limit on a motorway for example, your car – no matter what model you own – will start depleting your petrol or diesel reserves much faster.

Furthermore, there is also the option of trying to use your car less in the first place, which you can consider. Of course, going to and from work in your car may be a necessity if you live somewhere remote, or it would simply take too long out of your day to travel by any other means. However, if you are located close enough to work that allows you to get there on a bicycle or even walk, then even doing so at least once or twice a week would make a difference to your pocket. In fact, you might enjoy it to the point where you will begin to do it more often as well.

There are other ways you can save money on your car costs too. For example, a smaller car will be cheaper to buy road tax for, as well as being cheaper to insure. A competitive car insurance policy can save you even more over time, and once you add up all the savings you will find that your car can indeed be a lot cheaper to run, providing you cut a few corners; just don’t do this while driving!

Women tend to think that men have it so easy when it comes to choosing a hairstyle. Should it be a low-number clipper cut, or maybe a short-back and sides? However, it would probably come as a big surprise to learn just how complex men’s hairstyles have become over the past few decades.

In historical times, men often sported quite luxurious hairstyles – think of the wigs in the French Courts in the 1700s. However, the Victorian era signalled the start of a more subdued time, with women’s styles being natural and tame, whilst men kept their hair very short, lathered in macasser oil, and sported a beard, sideburns or a moustache. As we progressed into the 1920’s, hair for men was very simple – short and neat, and an outrageous style statement for men at this time probably constituted something as simple as a side parting.

This continued until after the Second World War, after which time things seemed to relax and men began to wear their hair long or slicked back, which was considered to be very ‘Hollywood’ for men. However the 1950’s was considered to be one of the turning points for men’s’ hairstyles, as Elvis and James Dean hit the headlines with their enviable quiffs, and long and heavy sideburns. As a consequence men everywhere started to take more time over their appearance.

The 1970’s proved a great decade for men’s hair – personal expression was the key to a great hairstyle. Groovy looks were big this era, and both men and women embraced more natural styles with longer locks and shaggy tresses. Think the Beatles, the Stones and David Cassidy – all had great shaggy styles. There is evidence that many of the 1970’s hairstyles are on trend today, because they are classically appealing.

As we sweep through to the eighties, music and film idols still influenced the hairstyles of the decade. At the start of the eighties there were two schools of influence in men’s hairdressing, both of which were influenced by music. There was the cult of the Mods, where men were very minimalist in their choice of styles; shaved heads perfectly accompanying sharp suits in monochrome colours. At the other extreme there were the New Romantics with their more flamboyant styling, long fringes and bold highlights.

This shift saw men starting to ‘care’ for their hair and although sleeking, sculpturing and moulding products had been used throughout the decades to achieve the most difficult of looks, men were now targeted with their very own hair care regimes. Gone were the days when men pinched their girlfriend’s shampoo; the men now had their own products. With new all-male packaging of men’s toiletries, it was now even more normal for bathrooms to be sporting a range of his products as well as hers.

But as we creep into the 21st century, a whole new man has arrived: a man that possesses hair straighteners and is proud to admit it; a man that teases, sprays, blow-dries and straightens his hair to achieve ‘that’ look and style.

With men’s styles looking even more complicated than they do today – some layers short, some longer, sweeping fringes or hairbands, even our male counterparts require a few tools of the trade to achieve their desired look.

Whether it is a family holiday or just a passing visit on your travels, Austria is full of unique areas to visit. The popular capital city of Vienna in particular offers plenty of history, culture, and culinary delights that would be sure to provide a little bit of something for everyone.

Situated on one of Europe’s longest rivers – the Danube – Vienna offers a range of attractions that are worth discovering, no matter your reasons for visiting the City. Depending on the time of year you visit, there are festivals taking place, celebrating both the music and film formats, and are enjoyed by many interested locals and tourists alike.

Vienna has become world known for its musical history, particularly classical music; being the city where the famous symphony orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic, were to originate from. Vienna is also host to the graves of two well known classical music composers, namely Beethoven, at Zentralfriedhof Cemetery and Mozart, at St.Marx Cemetery. Whilst visiting a cemetery might not be to everyone’s taste, the graves of two of the world’s popular classical composers are located in very peaceful and scenic grounds and provides an enjoyable walk for all individuals.

Situated amidst the shops and museums of Vienna are the Wurstelstande or sausage stands as they are typically known to the locals. Fairly inexpensive to buy, you will find a varied range of sausages that are prepared by the locals and offer an opportunity to take a bite out of Austria’s culinary culture during those long sight-seeing walks around the city.

No matter how young or old you are, the zoo is an enjoyable visit for all, particularly when it is immersed in history, and the Tiergarten Schonbrunn is the oldest zoo in the world having been constructed in 1752. Situated within the grounds of the famous Schonbrunn Palace, it is one of the few zoos worldwide to have giant pandas as residents.

Take a further look around Vienna and you will discover the grand architecture on display throughout the city, with architecture taking inspiration from Roman and Baroque periods, as well as modern architecture and Art Nouveau styling. Some of Vienna’s buildings rank among the best known examples of Art Nouveau in the world; among them The Secession building and the Kirche am Steinhof. Meanwhile, one of Vienna’s most popular attractions, the Hundertwasserhaus, was designed to counteract the clinical, sterile look of Vienna’s modern architecture and features uneven floors and a roof covered with earth and grass, while large trees adorn the rooms.

Such is the beauty of Vienna that it attracts thousands of visitors every year, and as you might expect hotels in Vienna are often busy with tourists looking to sample the culture and romanticism which the city offers.

With the amount of retail packaging waste exceeding the 10million tonne mark each year, landfill sites are now overflowing as a result of unnecessary excess and non-biodegradable packaging.

The most infamous culprit of late is the excessive packaging used in the distribution and display of Easter eggs. These poorly-designed packaging drives over 100million tonnes of packaging into the UK waste stream of which only 30% is taken to be recycled.

This large amount of waste hitting the UK’s waste bins equates to the equivalent of an extra 49 million tonnes of CO2 as a result of excess packaging. Retailers have undergone radical changes within recent years to reduce this figure by supplying more unpackaged products that are distributed more efficiently. But is this really enough?

The blame is not only that of the retailers, as consumers across the country must change their buying patterns and help set an example for our children by promoting environmentally friendly packaging and bolstering the growing recycling culture within the UK.

Some companies are taking this issue very seriously and are currently trialling new packaging in their outbound deliveries in the form of popcorn. Currently these companies use recycled paper and chippings in their deliveries, but are now testing this unique popcorn packaging in a bid to encourage recycling, reduce their carbon footprints and save money.

This popcorn packaging is not a new concept however and was trialled back in the 1980’s, but never caught on due to its expense at a time of UK economic depression. The weight of popcorn is much lower compared to chippings and other environmentally friendly packaging counterparts, which saves money on transport costs and also reduces the carbon emissions released during transport.

A push towards popcorn packaging maybe a step forward; however this idea is not without its drawbacks. With crops being diverted for use in biofuels and the increasing popularity of popcorn packaging, some fear that those in Third World countries are not receiving necessary food supplies they need in order to survive.

Reducing the amount of packaging and unnecessary “breathing space” around products would cut the amount of packaging going to landfill and the popcorn involved in distribution can encourage companies and individuals to set up their own compost heaps.

Going green can save a lot of money; however the main roadblock in doing this is the cost involved in transferring over to green technologies and the impacts upon growing third world economies. A lot of companies who distribute thousands of retail items each day, ranging from display cases, mannequins and literature holders to electronic equipment are each doing their part by trialling popcorn packaging in distributing their products and in going yellow, you too can go green.

If you’ve named your car George or Mildred, you’re not the only one. A recent website survey revealed that over 4.5 million Britons, equating to one out of five UK car owners, have given their car a pet name and think of their ‘little baby’ motor as engendered, rather than an ‘it’.

Popular names included Fred, Monty, George and Betsy and the research conducted by Fish 4 Cars also indicated that people buying their first ever car are most likely to christen it; 32% in total, or almost one in three admitting to doing just that. However, there was a definite gender split with one in four men and a much higher proportion of women, four out of ten, admitting to naming their car. But as names that reflected the owner’s perception of their car’s performance, such as ‘The Beast’ were much less popular, perhaps that was also an indication of the gender bias in naming cars.

People under 35 were more likely to name their four wheeled friend, with 22% admitting to doing so against 18% across all ages, although 27% of the over-55s questioned admitted to naming their very first vehicle, many years ago.

Not surprisingly, the research also revealed that those affectionately naming their cars and therefore giving it an identity tended to be more careful owners, meaning that anyone looking for a second-hand bargain should first ask the seller if the motor has a name. Such owners are also more likely to ensure that any minor damage or fault with the car is repaired sooner, rather than later.

Results gathered from 200 car dealers across the UK also noticed a difference in the way that named cars were maintained, suggesting that as many as three-quarters of them boast a full service history (FSH) and are more likely to be kept overnight in a garage.

Interestingly, the research also found there was no correlation between makes of cars and the owner’s propensity to give them a name. A brand new Rolls Royce was just as likely to be a Roger as a third or fourth hand Ford Focus, as the bestowing of a name merely reflects the owner’s sentimental attachment to the vehicle and is not related to its monetary value. Unfortunately, naming a vehicle is unlikely to have any effect on the vehicle’s car insurance premium, either!

Some of the more bizarre names that owners admitted giving to their vehicles included Romford Rustbucket, Buffy the Fiesta Slayer, The Little Orange Basket and Huff Puff the Silver Bullet. However, the joint top names from 15,000 respondents in the survey were Betsy and Bessie, with Fred coming in second and Baby third.

An early form of life insurance can be traced back to Roman times when, because of the high costs of funerals, clubs were formed, known as ‘burial clubs’. The guarantee of such an organisation for its members was that for a regular contribution they knew that upon death, their burial club would provide the necessary finance to cover the costs of their funeral and in some cases provide small lump sums for their dependants.

However, following the fall of Rome in the Fifth century, many of the financial disciplines and mechanisms that prevailed during the time of the Empire, such as life insurance, simply died out with the Romans; not to be revived until well into the Middle Ages almost a thousand years later. In the UK, today’s life insurance industry has its roots in the 17th century when a new form of entrepreneurs known as ‘underwriters’ gathered at fashionable coffee houses throughout London, including the famous Lloyds of London to insure other’s risks such as traders, ship owners and merchants.

Like the ancient Roman burial clubs modern day life insurance can be purchased simply to ensure that the costs of funeral expenses for the insured are covered. More likely, however, the sum insured will include an amount to pay off a mortgage and also provide a considerable lump sum for any dependants. Anyone who owns property that is mortgaged would be well-advised to take out life insurance for an amount at least equal to the cost of discharging the mortgage in the event of the mortgage payer’s death.

Even though contemplating one’s untimely demise can be distressing to many, it is far less so than leaving behind dependants that do not have adequate finances to continue to live in the family home. Life insurance allows families to not have to compound the loss of a loved one with the subsequent financial misery of losing a breadwinner.

There are different types of cover under life insurance policies. For example, some include critical illness cover that pays out a lump sum on the diagnosis of a number of critical illnesses or conditions, as well as upon death. Other types of life insurance policies include accidental death cover that provides a fixed sum to dependants should the worst happen to the insured. Unlike a more comprehensive life insurance policy, accidental death cover is usually available without having to undergo a medical, as it does not cover death through natural causes, but only covers death as a result of accidents.

Anyone wishing to cover themselves or their family should first seek advice from an insurance expert before they commit to a particular policy. Depending upon their individual circumstances it may transpire that all they actually require is just enough cover to pay for their funeral – exactly like the cover offered by the ancient Roman burial clubs.

When it first became economic to use computers for business, companies began searching for appropriate applications. While repetitive calculations, like the ones used for payroll, were no problem to the computer, when attempting to calculate the amount of materials a company would have to buy, problems arose.

Material Requirements Planning (MRP) systems, as they were known before ERP systems, had two main faults. Firstly, nobody could work out how to keep the planning systems stable, with every MRP run producing widely different results, due to the fluctuations in demand and supply. Additionally, the MRP systems were driving inventory up, rather than reducing it, due to every fluctuation upwards increasing supply orders which could not be easily reduced.

ERP was sold as the solution to these problems. Essentially, ERP systems are the same as MRP systems but with some extra features, which vary from system to system. Typically, human resource management and salaries and document control will be included.

The mechanics for implementing a successful ERP are not difficult yet many businesses stumble during the set up of such systems due to not establishing a common agenda throughout the business and ensuring everyone involved has their own needs and objectives met. Once this is established the tools and techniques needed to accomplish this is relatively easy.

Key to the successful implementation of the system is a sales and operations plan. This is the process by which financial business plans are converted into operational plans for running the business. If the sales and operations plan is to be a common plan, it must have a common language. The common language is nearly always the things a company produces and the customer buys. After all, having a sales department talking about the value of orders received is useless when the factory want to know what to produce and when. The sales and operations plan is the starting point for master production scheduling, a way to get everyone working in synchronisation before improving control of the business using ERP as the tool.

Once set up, the main role of the Master Production Schedule is demand management. This is a commercial process and so must be taught to commercial people. Demand management utilised properly gives a higher level of customer service and more stable manufacturing with lower inventory, meeting everyone’s business objectives.

An enterprise resource planning system is the only tool you need to achieve a change in business performance but it is not a solution in its own right. Factors such as sales and marketing departments providing a regularly updated forecast of the product they need to meet the market needs and when they need it and when Operations recognise it’s in everyone’s best interests to follow the plan are key to the success of your business and ERP system.

Everybody loves reminiscing about childhood loves – whether it’s favourite cartoons, music groups or books. The feel-good sensation brought on by nostalgia is beaten by no other – which is why so many nostalgia-based, retro products are available today, from printed clothes to tin lunchboxes, comics and films.

In recent years, the buzz has been all about superhero movies. With successful first-time cinematic releases for Spiderman, Daredevil, The Incredible Hulk and the X-Men, it was only a matter of time before filmmakers turned to older models to revamp and capitalise on previous success. The latest instalment of the Batman franchise – a semi-remake of the original 1989 film and sequel to 2005′s Batman Begins – has been received with extraordinary excitement. In 2006, the Superman film series was picked up again after almost 20 years of downtime.

Superman was first created by DC comics in 1938. Batman followed a year later in 1939. Their comic book success is something that we’re all aware of. Most Brits will remember some incarnation of the comics, television shows, cartoons and movies that surrounded these superheroes – including merchandise such as clothing depicting the cartoon characters and their logos in the stores; now more than ever thanks to the increase in retro popularity once again.

That being said, it’s not really fair to say such heroes as Spiderman, Batman and Superman are coming back into fashion – despite the recent influx in new film series and remakes surrounding the superhero franchise, they’ve never really been all that unpopular. Other things, however, have.

If the Spice Girls hadn’t broken up and had continued releasing singles and albums since their end in 2001, it’s uncertain as to whether their recent The Return of the Spice Girls tour would have been met with the overwhelming success that it was. Driven by nostalgia’s desire to relive their childhood fandom, Girl Power devotees ensured that the London concert was sold out in 38 seconds – that’s 23,000 tickets.

The Spice Girls comeback tour followed the similarly successful return of Take That in 2006. Other bands that have jumped on the wagon include Boyzone and Five. Boyzone recently completed a successful tour, but the latter don’t seem to have made much headway after their comeback announcement in 2006.

Whatever you think about the various comebacks across all forms of entertainment, it’s hard to ignore the sheer nostalgic value many of them bring to remind us of our younger days. Whether it’s seeing Batman – yet again – on the big screen or adorning yourself with new ‘old’ clothes depicting your favourite pre-noughties band or cartoon characters on retro t-shirts, it’s safe to assume these ‘old’ icons will remain in the public eye for a good while to come.

Buying a house is probably the biggest investment you are ever likely to make, it is a huge moment in your life and you are unlikely to invest quite as much thought and effort into something again.

As a general rule, mortgage companies allow you to borrow three times your salary, or two and a half times your joint salaries if you’re buying with someone else. In the current market there are a number of different types of mortgage available; some of which will let you borrow more than this. Thus after saving enough for an initial deposit you can set about seeing what is out there and what best suits you.

And so it begins: a time consuming but ultimately rewarding search; assuming, of course that you listen to good advice and examine everything in the greatest of detail. You will be required to step out of your comfort zone a little and begin to think about the immediate and long-term future.

Taking out a mortgage is a daunting step for many, involving numerous meetings, paperwork and a very thorough examination of your financial affairs. It is advisable to prepare for any meetings with your mortgage broker or financial advisor by creating a list of your current finances, such as salary, expenses, debtors and any information you have about your credit history. Preparation and honesty will see the process run a lot smoother.

The typical mortgage is repaid over 25 years, so it is best to be in your first property for five years in order to reap the benefits. This is due to the fact that if you have a repayment mortgage, most of your repayments during the first years are spent only paying interest. Also, when you factor in the cost of moving (solicitors, stamp duty etc.) you will find that it’ is not very cost effective to move regularly.

To compare mortgages and assess your options is the best course of action, as the calculations involved will help to quickly dismiss the options that are not suitable and leave you with a choice of more manageable options.

There are many mortgages out there but those available to you are determined more by your personal finances than by choice. Among those out there are, fixed and variable rate mortgages, cash back, offset and flexible mortgages to name a few.

While it is understandable when buying a property to be more concerned with its size than with studying the small print on the mortgage agreement, failure to do so can prove very costly in the long run. It is strongly recommended to review your mortgage agreement in detail, and the smaller the print, the closer you pay attention is a good rule of thumb.

Many may baulk at the work involved in securing the correct mortgage, but like anything else, once you commit to making the time to sit down and go through it all, you will find that things will fall into place and your efforts will be rewarded.

It has always been deemed as a fashion-conscious world for females, but the same is also increasingly becoming the case for men. There is now a genuine interest from a male perspective in fashion, and equally there is no shame in admitting this, particularly as men also have an interest in looking their best. The world of men’s fashion is changing, and is now adding more diversity to men’s appearance through the use of jewellery.

For many years it was deemed ‘cool’ to wear a slap bracelet, particularly if you were a male during those school days. However, as time has progressed, the type of jewellery men have added to their appearance has also changed. There are now a growing number of men wearing earrings of all types, for example.

There are a few main types of jewellery that are particularly popular with men; including wrist-wear such as bead and studded bracelets and bangles. There are also many types of fashionable rings available, ensuring that there are other purposes for wearing a ring other than being spoken for.

Cuff-links are becoming ever more popular, and such are normally available in a wide array of various shapes and patterns, whilst the style of cuff-links you choose will normally complement your personal fashion sense and are no longer reserved for the ‘smart’ look. Earrings are perhaps still quite common and have been for many years, being available in various styles such as studs and also plugs, with the latter considered intriguing for those individuals who would like to achieve a punk image. Other accessories of jewelleries include charm pins and badges, which act as great additions to clothing and bags whilst chain wallets can combine a bit of fashion with security.

There are also many forms of necklaces to choose from; from simple, handcrafted pendants to elaborate designer-branded necklaces, which can look very stylish particularly when wearing an open shirt or polo t-shirt.

Men’s jewellery is not there only for the purpose of making a fashion statement, but can act as the perfect present for any individual. While it might have began in an old fashion style in the form of pocket watches, men’s jewellery has since evolved to become more fashionable, both for the young and old generations.

For both sexes, this fashion-conscious world is forever evolving, but the type of jewellery you choose should complement the style you aim to achieve and the clothes you wear to achieve it. Whether it is a casual look, a smart, business attire or formal dress wear, there is a diverse range of men’s jewellery to choose from which will complement every style.
