Is Pay-For-Performance SEO The Best Solution For SMEs?
A pay-for-performance SEO model provides a relatively risk free SEO solution for SMEs as no payment is made until the objectives have been met. If the SEO specialist fails to meet the targets and objectives then the SME incurs no cost.
Increasingly we are seeing the rise of pay-for-performance models and done properly, these can provide significant benefits to SMEs by removing the risks that are associated with a service where there are few guarantees. A pay-per-performance model means the SEO specialist has to prove themselves and their service and bring about improved sales and leads.
There are several different types of pay-for–performance SEO models but the three main ones are:
Pay per ranking

This is one of the most successful pay-per-performance models and involved the SEO specialist pay being based on factors such as total sales, total profit, increase in sales or profit, or cost per acquisition. Done correctly it can be very successful but it relies heavily on robust tracking mechanisms that allow the SEO specialist to have visibility of the SME’s revenue, sales & profit figures.
Pay for Traffic
Existing levels of website traffic are recorded as a benchmark and then traffic targets are agreed and put in place. It is important that the SEO and SME work closely together to ensure that the quality of traffic is maintained. It allows the SEO for SMEs specialist to earn more if additional traffic is delivered by other channel, such as Social Media.
