Breaking Bones for a Living: The Johnny Knoxville Story

Johnny Knoxville, born Philip John Clapp on March 11, 1971, first came into the public consciousness at the start of the millennium as ringleader of the ‘Jackass’ television programme. After graduating from high-school in his native Knoxville, Tennessee, Clapp decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career, changing his name to Johnny Knoxville in tribute to his roots.

Finding it hard to get a big break in the City of Angels, Knoxville supported himself and his family by working in commercials as an extra and eventually started writing for skateboarding magazine ‘Big Brother’, performing stunts that would include testing self-defense equipment on himself, which would go on to become a staple of the magazine.

After meeting skateboard crew CKY and director Spike Jonze the concept of ‘Jackass’ was born. The show ran for 3 seasons and featured Knoxville and his cohorts Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn and Steve-O amongst others, performing daring stunts, often incorporating humour to provide the viewer with can’t-watch-can’t-look-away footage, ranging from the simple – letting a succession of people kick Knoxville in the groin while wearing a protective cup; to the more elaborate – riding a miniature rocket.

The show instantly became a hit on MTV, turning the ‘Jackass’ cast into celebrities overnight and helping Knoxville land parts in Hollywood films such as ‘Men in Black II’, ‘The Ringer’ and most notably, the big-screen adaptation of ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’. The show was not without critics however, as some claimed the show was a new intellectual low in entertainment; despite the disclaimers and warnings aired at the start of episodes, the show and MTV’s parent company Viacom still received lawsuits following copycats attempting to perform the onscreen stunts themselves, often with less-than-successful results.

After the show ended two Jackass films were made featuring footage even more extreme than what was allowed on TV. Both opened at No. 1 at the US Box office, and helped to successfully launch ‘Jackass’ spin-offs ‘Viva La Bam’, ‘Wildboyz’ and ‘Dr. Steve-O’.

More recently, Johnny Knoxville made headlines due to a particularly nasty motorbike accident. As part of a tribute to trailblazing daredevil Robert “Evel” Knievel, Johnny attempted to do a back flip on a motorcycle going up a small dirt hill. Unfortunately he lost control of the bike, sending it skywards for a few seconds before plummeting onto Knoxville’s body. The accident left Johnny with a torn urethra, but thanks to proper safety precautions, motorbike insurance and the best health care, Knoxville was able to make a full recovery within months.

As for the future, there are rumours of a third ‘Jackass’ film being in production, but regardless whether it happens or not fans can expect to continue to see Johnny Knoxville taking risks on the big screen so they don’t have to.

With various entertainment companies in her background, Ms. LaNay has stories stretching as far as Hansel and Gretel’s travels. At this point of her journey, the obstacles jumping in the way may seem complimenting to many underground artists. For Prema, it is a tiresome trek that has built a story for most mainstream artists to respect.

From the musically credited city named Atlanta, Prema LaNay grew from a short-story writer to a lyrical gypsy. Most that have laughed with the enigmatic female will say that a star was in the making long ago when most young girls are just deciding what outfit to pull favor for the weekend. Prema did not just acquaint herself with members from well known industry associations like L.O.D., Superfriends, and even Oomp Camp DJs but gained brothers and sisters in these networks. Although most that have interacted with her will say they had no idea of her level of hidden talent until rumors started floating in the air of a new female artist discovered by Mr. Jimmy Iovine, co-founder of Interscope Records. Mr. Iovine stumbled upon a manifestation of the latest sound of music and what is to come. From the years of work put into developing a signature so “one of kind,” Prema earned a direct deal with the music mogul’s label.

Now enter more drama…

With songs titled, “He Beats Me” to “Loving a Junkie,” the vulnerable yet unapologetic lady of passion speaks of what has not killed her but has made her stronger than what is abundant in the music today. Besides the early exploitation from the vultures wanting to feed off the rewards deserved by this organic talent, LaNay found herself in a tug-a-war for her own songs. The childish games were not of the label she signed with but, a smaller one that chose not to support and try it’s best to hinder her. The small label signed her main producer before her deal finalized, then demands came for her to pay the producer more money. Yes, the same producer she brought in the door before ever meeting them. This would in turn benefit people that were doing nothing for her. The producer that she partnered with for approximately 3 years turned his back in hopes of wringing her investments dry. A track from a song that was a part of her deal was sold and had her exact lyrics re-recorded by another female dealing with the independent label. Prema’s training years before taught this lady to create her own options rather than fight irrelevant battles.

Prema LaNay quickly created a whole new album. Once information was shut down to the small label who was penetrating Interscope for confidential records of the singer, every maneuver was used to try to terminate the star from her contract.

The most interesting part is the small label is owned by a well-known singer who is most recently known for being in a “Crazy” duo. The question is, “does that make him GREEEEEEEE-DY?” Probably. The connection was made when the established singer was given a cd of Prema’s music and took it to Interscope. Due to her solo creation of the material, there was no need for Iovine to have her sign to the independent label. Instead, with the advice of her lawyer, she managed a direct deal not usually granted to artists in her position. The independent label was compensated for there connecting contribution but quickly grew a need to either control or sabotage what they did not get to own.

International Industry Heads are spinning from the new find by Iovine. Prema’s already clubs in Japan and even the UK.

They also are wondering why the one-half of the “Crazy” song fame is trying so hard to stop this?
