Conservatories have come a long way since they first became popular, but historically there has always been the issue of your room becoming too hot in summer and then too cold in winter. To get around this problem and to ensure you can use your conservatory or orangery all year round, you need to think about heating.

Conservatories and orangeries generally lose heat up to 8 times faster than a normal cavity wall. Heat escaping can partly be remedied by double or triple glazing, as well as by using window blinds. This all helps since the heat built up during the day can then be trapped for use later on. Given all of this, one always needs to consider the heating options as none of them will completely counter the effects of heat loss, especially if you are thinking of using your conservatory or orangery throughout the winter.

The question is what heating options are there and why should you consider one over the other. This article will help you in this process.

Electric Underfloor Heating
This is a very convenient way to heat your conservatory and over recent years has grown in popularity. One of the major advantages is that it is invisible, meaning you do not have to worry about floor or wall radiators that can then complicate either the interior design or the living space. After all, one cannot place furniture against radiators without encountering other issues!

The other advantage of electric under floor heating is that the heating can be isolated. It will run off a 13 amp plug (UK) so it can be easily turned on or off without affecting the rest of the central heating at your home.

The main drawback with underfloor heating was the limits it placed on you regarding flooring. Historically, it used to be recommended with ceramic or stone flooring, with wooden or cork flooring avoided because of the fear of damage. These days, as the market has grown and the heating systems become more sophisticated, this problem can now largely be overcome. Speak to a reputable conservatory company to advise you on this matter to ensure you get the right system.

Water Underfloor Heating
This system is very similar to the traditional gas boiler and radiator system most people have in their homes in the UK. This system works by tapping into your current boiler and piping warm water through plastic pipes hidden underneath your conservatory or orangery floor.

The main advantage of heating your conservatory this way is because you have this system already. So assuming your current boiler will handle the additional demand placed upon it, it will often be a cost effective solution.

This raises a potential problem, you must make sure your current system will cope. In addition to this you must also remember that it is not an isolated system, so if you want the heating on, that means turning on your whole central heating. Keep in mind the point above about heat loss and there may be times where you just do not want the main system on just for your conservatory. If this occurs you can always turn off your other radiators, but that does not isolate the heating completely. This is not ideal when you just want to quickly warm up the conservatory but not the rest of the building.

CONSERVATORY RADIATORS
Radiators of course come in two forms, plumbed in and electric. The plumbed in versions are great so long as the capacity issue mentioned above is not an issue here. Electric versions are very practical and work independently of your main central heating. They can either be portable or hard wired. The portable variety can be very flexible although do not look as sophisticated as any other options covered here; the lose wires contribute to this significantly.

One key factor to keep in mind is that radiators take space and visually impact upon interior design. Many people live with this very happily but keep in mind the size of the dwarf walls that the glass sits upon. Adding small radiators to these walls gives the conservatory or orangery more of a chunky feel and pushes furniture into the room. So for smaller conservatories where space is more critical, you need to think through interior design considerations to make sure this is not restrictive.

CONSERVATORY AIR CONDITIONING
Air condition units also make good heaters as they use the heat pump to take warm air from the outside and then direct it within the conservatory or orangery. This makes the unit very versatile because it can cool your room down while it is hot and then heat it when the temperatures drop in the evening.

This heat pump can work all throughout the winter although it may not be sufficient for very cold days. The designer from a reputable conservatory company will be able to calculate the heat loss specific to your conservatory, and from that calculate the right unit you will need.

Breckenridge offers the most comprehensive choice of conservatory, contemporary extensions and contemporary conservatories in a choice of materials as well as a range of pool enclosures, summer houses and windows & doors.

Buying a conservatory is fraught with worry and potential problems. Part of this worry is down to the industry’s reputation for certain cowboy builders who are known for aggressive sales techniques, broken promises, poor quality work and occasionally going bust leaving the customer with no-one to turn to.

In response to this, the windows and conservatory industry has come together to rid the industry of the cowboys and provide protection to its customers. The result is the Double Glazing & Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS) who are there to take the risk out of buying conservatories for consumers.

There are other professional trade bodies covering the industry at the moment but none of them offer protection to the consumer in the way the Ombudsman can. What makes the DGCOS unique is its power and muscle it has within the industry.

Independent Ombudsman
The DGCOS is a true independent Ombudsman that has an ongoing process of vetting installers to ensure they are both honest and provide a quality service. This vetting process is an ongoing procedure to ensure standards do not slip. In addition to this they can act as a powerful arbiter if disputes do arise.

Why choose a DGCOS installer
As an overview the Ombudsman provides peace of mind. Specifically they deliver this by offering a series of benefits that are designed to help you.

Deposit protection: Initially they will protect any deposit you put down so long as it is not over 25% of the purchase price. This is great because this is always the point of no return with most contracts and parting with the money to someone who could go out of business the next day is always a worry at the back of your mind.

10 year guarantee: Having a comprehensive 10 year guarantee is essential to avoid the worry that you won’t be able to find your installer years after they have banked your money and then the roof starts to leak. We all know conservatory companies offer guarantees but also all worry they won’t be that bothered years after the conservatory has been completed. This guarantee is similar to the NHBC 10 year warranty offered by house builders.

Insurance Guarantee: What do you do if your conservatory company goes into liquidation? The insurance backed guarantee guards the consumer against this problem.

Professional Mediators: Like any complex project, disputes do happen. The conservatory industry cannot avoid these but what the Ombudsman can do is provide a free mediation service in the case of a dispute with any of its members.

Independent Inspectors: As part of the dispute resolution process, the Ombudsman can provide independent inspectors to verify exactly what work has been carried out and to what standard it has been done.

Binding Arbitration: The key to resolving any disputes within the DGCOC is a mandatory and legally binding arbitration service that all the members sign up to. This comprehensively protects the consumer with a process they know all installers will adhere to.

Win-Win
The DGCOS is a win-win for both consumer and installer. It offers the consumer complete peace of mind, while conservatory companies like it too because they do not want to be associated with cowboy installers that bring the reputation of the industry down and therefore deter people from buying.

To verify if your proposed installer is a member of the DGCOS either give them a call on 0845 053 8975 or go to www.dgcos.org.uk.

Breckenridge offers the most comprehensive choice of conservatory, contemporary extensions and wooden conservatories in a choice of materials as well as a range of pool enclosures, summer houses and windows & doors. Breckenridge Conservatories are proud of their association with the DGCOS and are founder members of the organisation.

Choosing a conservatory roof is one thing, but on every roof there are details that need to be considered. Crestings and finials are architectural features that are used to make the roof more decorative. They have been around for many years but it was from the Victorian age that architects became obsessed with detailed designs and ornate devices, so in conservatories built from this period onwards crestings and finials have frequently been used with the design of the building. As styles have changed and morphed over the years, these styles are still evident today although with more contemporary conservatories one can either just not use them at all or use then in a minimalist way.

Cresting is the material or finishing that runs along the central ridge of the roof while the finial is the pointed feature that sits at the front of the apex of the roof. Both these features sit on the roof capping and are more ornamental than functional. That said, they were originally designed so that the eye would glance up at the roof but they have also evolved so that they are also used as a devise so that birds to not perch on the roof and then leave a bird-like message on your clean glass. The finial also has a slight practical use in that it can be used as a lightning rod, although today the material used is often the same as the construction material, whether this be wood, cast aluminium or moulded plastic.

This brings us onto what crestings are made of. Most of the time it is similar to the finial and is made of either cast aluminium or moulded plastic. Most aluminium varieties are finished with a polyester based powder coating that leaves a very durable clean surface that is often guaranteed for 10 years depending on the supplier and the price of the cresting. Of course one can always use a moulded plastic cresting and this often comes out cheaper than aluminium. All crestings and finials should be available in a colour to match the paint work of your conservatory.

Crestings and finials come in a variety of designs, typically these are:

- Antique
- Traditional
- Victorian
- Regency
- Fleur-de-lys
- Baroque
- Edwardian
- Elizabethan
- Tudor

Sometimes a roof will have to be constructed of a stronger material like such as lead. Building regulations may stipulate that you construct the conservatory or orangery in a way that does not restrict ladder access to either windows on the first floor or a loft conversion. This will mean you may have to build the conservatory with a partial flat roof to give fire access. In cases like this the builder may also need to get building regulations signed off to prove this point. In addition to fire regulations, if a window in the main building overlooks the conservatory or orangery you will want to consider the design of the roof and its fittings much more closely since they will be visible from this window. If this is the case you might want to consider more expensive materials like lead, zinc or copper. The colours and textures of these metals can add a great deal to the look of your conservatory and change over time, although be prepared because they can also add a substantial amount to the final cost. For this reason we usually recommend synthetic weatherproof materials with a long guarantee.

Breckenridge offers the most comprehensive choice of hardwood conservatory, contemporary extensions and bespoke conservatories in a choice of materials as well as a range of pool enclosures, summer houses and windows & doors.

Making additions to one’s home is known as Home Improvement. Sometimes we do not change our house and live in the same house for an extended period of time. In that case, it is very important to look upon the things need to be repaired and we should check out all the things after every six months. Our homes are the best asset of our lives. After a hectic schedule of whole day, everyone wants to be at their home. So, it should be cozy and comfortable enough. It can also include improvements to lawns, gardens and outbuildings like gazebos and garages.

Home Improvement helps in:

Beautification and added features
Maintenance and repair
Additional space
Saving energy
Safety and preparedness

Home improvement includes rebuilding your attic, basement, bathroom, decks and patios, doors, drywall, kitchen and roofing. It is a total makeover for your home. Remolding kitchen is an important part of house renovation .Kitchen is the centerpiece of the home. Remodeling a kitchen can be great fun. It offers the opportunity to create a more energy-efficient kitchen and to create a space where the family can relax. Kitchen is a room where we cook, serve and eat. So before renovation some of the important factors should be considered like: storage, food preparation, and clean-up. Whether your kitchen is located into the living room or stands alone, items such as flat screen televisions, computers and more are great accessories in kitchens. Kitchen renovation instantly raises the value of your home.

Besides the kitchen, the bathroom is the second most important part of our house for renovations. You can also do the renovation by yourself and can save the money or can hire a contractor to do the renovation. You can do the job by yourself if you do not need to relocate the plumbing pipes and ventilation air ducts. A professional plumber is required if most of the work involves plumbing. A home improvement has many benefits. Renovations not only make your home more clean and comfortable but also can increase value of your home.

Encouraging key employees to employ a nanny to take care of their young children can benefit organizations with increased employee productivity, retention of qualified talented employees, and increased profitability. Key employees are vital building blocks and help in sustaining the organization through tough times and in leveraging opportunities. Effectively addressing their child care needs will motivate, energize, and engage the employees to work efficiently and productively. By having a nanny to take of their children, the employees can remain fully assured about the safety of their loved ones and work productively with complete peace of mind. Also, it helps significantly reduce employee turnover rate, absenteeism, stress etc.

Improves Morale of Employees
A nanny takes good care of the children in absence of their parents. Children are engaged in productive activities, games, reading, writing, etc… and all of their dietary and nutritional requirements are met. The employees can proactively work with productivity as they are fully assured that their child is in safe hands and getting personalized care and attention. This improves the morale of employees as they value the organization for improving their work-life balance. As child care is an important factor for working parents to focus on their career, encouraging employees to have nanny for their children can effectively address this concern. Thus, the employees can work harder to their full potential without bothering about child’s safety and health.

Increases Employee Attendance
Organizations encouraging employees to employ a nanny can witness increased employee attendance as their child care concerns are addressed. Working parents remain absent from duty in case child falls ill or due to some unpredictable circumstances. Many times employees leave early or report late on duty due to sudden illness of children. Employing a nanny enables the employees to attend the office even in case of illness of children. Having a nanny at home makes an employee feel satisfied and relaxed as nanny can take good care of their children. The employee attendance increases as they feel positively for the company that takes care and understands about their family responsibilities. High commitment level can be seen from employees who get benefited from encouragement by organizations to have a nanny.

Reduces Stress for Employees
Many couples have a tough time balancing the work and family responsibilities after having a child. This leads to significant amount of stress as they have to match the expectations of their demanding profession and also handle family responsibilities. Having the services of a nanny help them strike a perfect work-life balance. The health and safety of the children is the primary concern for working parents. A nanny with her expertise and skills can take care of a child or children even in case of emergencies. Moreover, keeping the child at home ensures that the child gets protected from germs or pollution and falls ill less frequently. A nanny can perform other household chores like tidying up the house, preparing meals, taking children to school, doing laundry, etc… which can reduce considerable stress for working parents.

Addresses Challenges of Having Children
Working parents will face lot of challenges after they have a child. Some parents either quit their job or reduce their working hours in order to look after their children. Most working parents cannot work overtime, work on weekends, and go on business trips due to the responsibility of taking care of their children. A nanny can effectively take care of the children while their parents work. Thus, parents can pursue their careers and also fulfill emotional, social, educational and financial needs of their children.

The employee turnover rate can be reduced as working parents will have loyalty to company showing commitment to address their child care problems. Qualified talented employees can be retained within the organization by initiating steps like giving a pay hike to meet the expenses after hiring a nanny. Even the cost towards hiring and training can be reduced as existing productive employees can be retained.

This hot water is used for cooking, cleaning, bathing, and space heating. Hot water system must be able to meet the requirements of the whole house. Modern Solar Hot Water Cylinder comes with foam lagging bonded on to the outside of the cylinder. This helps in keep the water hot for a long time. They are available in different shapes and sizes which suit the space available, but the capacity of the cylinder is important. There are different types of Hot Water Cylinder available, all of which basically store and supply hot water, but in different ways.

The 5 main types of cylinder are:

Direct – These types of cylinder only use with Circulators because the water is heated directly with them.

Indirect – They can be used with any type of central heating system. In them water from the central heating goes through a coil of pipe within the cylinder but doesn’t mix with the water in the cylinder.

Primatic (self priming) – They are only used with gravity systems because the water for the central heating is taken from within the cylinder, and is only separated by an air lock.

Thermal Storage – It is a large type of cylinder. It is used were the main cold water is passed through a coil of pipe within the cylinder taking its heat from the thermal storage and supplying the hot taps. The central heating circuit is also taken from the cylinder.

Unvented Cylinder – This water cylinder is same as an indirect cylinder except there isn’t a header tank, and it’s connected directly to the main water supply giving mains water pressure to the hot taps and showers.

Some time Solar Hot Water Cylinder feels warm to touch .This happens when energy is wasted from cylinder. This energy loss is known ‘standing loss’. So to avoid energy waste a cylinder wrap is used. It is a simple way to stop unnecessary heat loss from occurring. Solar Hot Water Cylinder wraps are available in wool and fiberglass. It is easy to install a wrap and takes less than 5 minutes .It is one of the most effective energy efficient measures you can take. There are no health or safety risks associated with the use of hot water cylinder wraps.

Your conservatory will sit on just one thing – the foundations, so for that reason it is pretty important to ensure you get the best advice in deciding how to proceed with your conservatory or orangery.

Many top conservatory companies do not include ground work within their service, often leaving the homeowner to source someone locally to build this for them. Also, one has to consider the ability for digging equipment to gain access to the property, if this is not available then it will have to be dug manually.

There are four main types of foundations to be aware of and knowing something about them can help you make the right decision and potentially save you money. The four types of foundations are:

Deep Strip Foundations
The most common foundations to be used in conservatory and orangery construction are deep strip foundations. Where the ground is suitable they are the cheapest type of foundation to build your conservatory on. The strips are usually 225 mm deep and a minimum of 450 mm wide. Remember that foundations are usually smaller for those on a 2-story building, where the width of the deep strips are usually 600 mm – this happens to be the width of a typical trench-digging bucket.

Trench Fill Foundations
Trench fill foundations are what they appear, it is a trench filled with concrete. They tend to be quicker to prepare than deep strip foundations, especially if you have mechanical digging equipment. So they have less labour time (and disruption) but you often get slightly higher costs for materials. The trench is filled to a depth of 500 mm with a minimum of 150 mm below ground level. Lining may be used where ground movement might be expected. This type of foundation is common in areas with the following round conditions:
.	Where there is a high water table.
.	In areas of heavy clay.
.	Where the soil is loose.
.	Where there are trees nearby that will soak up lots of moisture from the soil.

Raft Foundations
When Trench Fill or Deep Strip Foundations can not be used, Raft Foundations can be a suitable alternative. If recommended to use this type make sure you find out the rationale for this and ensure the edge of the raft sitting next to the existing property will not move away when the raft settles – this can happen when the rate at which the soil settles underneath the new conservatory is significantly different than the main building, for example, rising water tables over time can influence this. Your builder or architect will be able to calculate the weight of the conservatory to provide an estimate of this.

Piled Foundations
If good bearing ground can only be found a little deeper underground, for example on reclaimed land, then it may be necessary to bore into the ground to sink concrete pillars to provide a suitable foundation for your conservatory. Then concrete ground beans are used to span from pile to pile to provide a strong base for the conservatory or orangery. As you can imagine, access for machinery will make the task of digging the bore holes a lot easier and less costly in terms of labour.

Please note that your ground conditions will affect the choice of which foundations to use. So it is wise to get good advice, or easier, use a reputable conservatory company that do the ground works themselves and include this within the overall quote and guarantee.

Breckenridge offers the most comprehensive choice of hardwood conservatory, contemporary extensions and bespoke conservatories in a choice of materials as well as a range of pool enclosures, summer houses and windows & doors.

We all like changes whether it about new place, new job, new home or improving the old. Kitchen renovation has become an essential expense for every one. This is because a few simple changes can alter the whole look and feel of your home. One of the most frequently re-modeled rooms in a house is kitchen. And the most used one also. It is the one point in the house that elevates interest. Being constantly used and hub of every work, it requires a remodeling job. It is one of the economical alternative ways to getting a completely new look to your house.

If you are moving to an old style property or you are on some budget, remodeling gives a new place and styled place to live. Generally, it happens that when we move to an old styled property, the kitchen area looks strange with new style appliances. Before you go for the change, know what you want

1.Installation of new cabinet door handles or new taps ware:
2.Re-surfacing bench top and cabinets
3.Plastering and waterproofing
4.Polishing existing sink
5.Tiling and painting
6.Kitchen design
7.Plumbing for the installation of gas appliances, taps, sinks, dishwasher, etc.
8.Installation of electrical appliances, lights, power points, etc

You should also be prepared for other things when you start with renovating it. Functions like food preparation, storage and meal clean-up need to be moved to a temporary ‘kitchen area’. Before you dismantle the first, get ready with your advance set up for second one. You need a sink, a microwave and an electric toaster oven, a plan of menu’s that can be easily prepared outside of the kitchen. You could use your laundry room for sink. For counter space, the top of the washing machine can be used. This will depend upon whether you are opting for a complete kitchen renovation or just sprucing a bit.

The cost involved will depend upon the current state of the area, the quality materials used, size and your budget involved. If you choose a professional company for renovating, make sure that company is
licensed and that they use quality materials. Confirm timescales and get yourself a good price quote.
