Ancient in the true sense of the word the origins and the rich culture of Athens can be traced back to the era when mythical gods and goddesses ruled the world. Today its fascinating history is portrayed by an array of imposing ancient structures each with its own distinctness. With a culture reflecting this rich history, a visit to Athens is definitely a unique experience, especially for the history buff.

Those arriving in Athens for the first time generally head immediately for the Acropolis. Parched on a steep rock above the sprawling city this symbol of ancient Athens dominates the city’s skyline.

Foundations laid in 490BC its main construction had taken place in the Golden Age of Pericles during the period 461-429BC. The site of Acropolis includes the Acropolis Museum and four other sacred building all built in the 5th century BC. The monumental entrance, the Propylaea, adorns the site with its Ionic and Doric styles and the
beautifully restored Temple of Athena Nike is on the left of Propylaea. The largest building on the Acropolis, the biggest surviving monument of Doric architecture, entirely made of Pentelic marble, is the awe-inspiring Pathenon – the backdrop to the magnificent view of Athens from this exotic site.

The remains of ancient Athenian commercial and civic centre, Agora, lies clustered below the Acropolis. The area, where once the great philosophers Socrates and Plato trod, is littered with ruins of numerous ancient buildings such as the Dionysos Theatre, the world’s oldest theatre where great plays by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides were first performed. The restored building of the 200 BC Stoa of Attalos now contains artifacts portraying 5,000 years of Athenian history.

Southeast of Athens, about an hour’s ride, is Sounion with its famous cape where the foundations of a small Temple of Athena Souniaea and the ruins of the temple of Poseidon are located. Although the famous statue of Poseidon no longer reigns over the ocean below, the Temple of Poseidon, with its magnificent view of the Aegean, still fulfills the role from its high promontory.

The city of Athens itself holds a heap of treasures, lively night life, interesting shops, little churches and restaurants serving culinary delights. With a fairly good public transport system and being pedestrian friendly it’s easy for tourists to explore the city. A popular gathering place for all visitors to the city is the old town section of Athens, better known as Plaka. A stroll through the little streets, with its ancient monuments, Byzantine churches and mosques, is an experience in itself. The traditional ‘rembetika’ music at night complements the atmosphere.

Most of Athens’ museums are clustered along the Vassilissis Sophias Avenue. Also known as the ‘museum mile’ starting from the Syntagma Square, a walk along this avenue takes you through the 3,000 years of Athenian history perusable in some of the best museums including the Benaki Museum, the Museum of Cycladic Art and the Byzantine Museum.
Other places in the city worth exploring are, Monastiraki, renowned for its flea market, the old town atmosphere and lively night life in Psirri, and the Syntagma Square for just relaxing and people watching.

The best place to get a feel of the atmosphere of the city is the Wenceslas Square. A place which played a major role in Prague’s past – a turning point in its modern history, from the Nazi occupation, the communist takeover and the Velvet revolution – is now a major attraction due its shopping stores and cafes. A lovely place to take a break and indulge in a traditional Prague fried cheese sandwich. The Museum of Natural History is just above the square for those interested in probing further in to the country’s rich past.
The impressive medieval Prague Castle is an important symbol of the Czech – ancient and present day. Depicting architectural styles throughout the times, such as the Roman style form the 10th century to the Gothic style from the 14th century, the castle offers many interesting sights for the curios visitor. A composition of many palaces some of the major attractions are the two Titans framing the entrance, chambers of Czech royal family and the St George’s Basilica.
The biggest attraction within the Prague Castle, the St. Vitus Cathedral is a spiritual symbol of the Czech state. One of the most beautiful creations of the Gothic era, the interior of the cathedral features intricate décor and stained glass windows. The secret coronation chamber of the King of the Holy Roman Empire lies within these premises.

One of the most beautiful Neo-renaissance structures in the city, the Rudolfinum, is yet another adornment on the banks of the river Vltava. The famous music auditorium of the city, it had been the home-stage of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra for many decades. The Rudolfinum also houses the Dvorak Hall, famous for its acoustics, and the Galerie Rudolfinum, an art gallery focusing mainly on contemporary art. Acclaimed for its classical concerts the hall hosts varies classical music concerts and exhibitions.

The gorgeous Gothic structure of Charles Bridge spans the beautiful Vltava River which runs through the city of Prague. This famous landmark is adorned by giant stone statues representing religious figures that, it is believed, bring good fortune to those who touch them. What is by day a home to various artists and musicians transforms in to a dreamlike atmosphere at night offering views of the fairytale Prague Castle over the shimmering waters of the Vltava River.

For a modern experience amongst historic architecture visit the Dancing House. A most original piece of modern architecture this structure was modeled after the famous dancers Ginger Rogers and Fred Astair. The glass and steel structure with its daring curvy outline dominates the banks of Vltava River.

Lined with a variety of cafes, bars and restaurants offering traditional Czech grub and beer, the Old Town Square is located right at the very heart of the old Prague town. Take a break from the busy sightseeing tour or just spend the day admiring the view of the golden spires of the Gothic Church in one direction and the ornate Classical Church in the other.

With the best of Mediterranean climate of long summers, pleasant winters and lots of sunshine, Antalya is a perfect holiday destination. The biggest attraction here is its exquisite natural beauty, especially the coastal attractions and the lovely beaches, which is well complemented by a plenteous historic past which is showcased by a selection of interesting sights. And if you are willing to venture away from the city, the complete Antalya experience is yours!

Generally the summer months bring in a lively atmosphere to Antalya as the city stirs with holidaymakers in search of sun, sand and sea. The beaches are gorgeous during the summer and are the main attraction during this time of the year. And even though the main public beach can get a little too busy during the peak season there are other beaches at Bedibi, Tekirova, Phaselis, Olympos, Kas-Kaputas and Kermer which provide less crowded atmosphere to enjoy the holiday. Most waterfront hotels offer their own beaches for guests.

Antalya offers a dazzling array of interesting sights and most of these sights are located in the old town better known as Kaleici. Located in the city’s historic district, Kaleici features narrow streets which lead up to marvelous pieces of original ancient Turkish architecture. This historic city centre, which had embraced many civilizations, is now an attractive little town with hotels, bars and restaurants. Amongst the attractions to look out for are the memorial Hadrian Arch and the Clock Tower, both dating back to the Hellenistic era, and the port’s marina which has been completely restored.

The ancient city of Perge, perched on a hill just outside of Antalya, is believed to date back to the 4th century BC or earlier. Home to one of Asia Minor’s oldest Christian communities it had played a significant role in the Roman imperial times. The remarkable ruins and archaeological attractions include the Temple of Artemis along with the theatre, churches and palaestra and the acropolis which was built during the Bronze Age. Perge is located approximately 15km east of Antalya.

Originally a base used by Alexander the Great during the winter months, the ancient Lycian city of Phaselis dates back to the 6th century. The main attraction here is the Hadrianus gate which was built in 129 AD to welcome the Roman emperor Hadrianus. Other wonderful ancient ruins at Phaselis include temples, a theatre, an archway, an amphitheatre and an aqueduct. The small museum onsite offers information on the background of the city. A swim in one of the fascinating little bays of Phaselis provides a perfect ending for day exploring the ruins. The city is about 56 km away from Antalya.

The dark blue tiled fluted minaret of the Yivli Minare Mosque is the landmark of the city. Built in 1230 the minaret reaches a height of 38 metres. The original structure had been a Byzantine church which was later converted to a mosque during the reign of the Seljuk sultan Ala ad-Din Kay Qubadh (1220-1237). The current structure, a reconstruction on the original in the 14th century, boasts six domes and is one of the oldest examples of multi-dome construction in Anatolia. Today the building houses the Antalya Ethnographic Museum.

For a relaxing holiday on one of the cleanest beaches of the Lycian coast, with an added advantage of easy access to lovely pine forests, visit Kalkan on the western shores of Antalya. Originally an old fishing village the small town with it historical sights, white washed little houses and warm traditional Turkish hospitability offers the ideal Antalya holiday with the just the correct blend of nature and ancient attractions.

Getting Around in Paris

Being one of the most beautiful cities in the world, it is essential for any visitor to Paris to be able to make the best of the opportunity and see as much of the city as possible. And getting around Paris is much easier than any other populated city.

Walking would be the best option, provided one has a good idea of the city layout, as it gives a visitor ample time to breathe in and absorb the beauty the city has to offer. Also, Paris proper is actually very compact, about 6km wide, and walking is reasonably easy. Of course if it’s too tiring there are always plenty of other travel options to choose from.

For safe and fast transportation the Paris Metro is the best option. Comprising of 200 kilometres of rail track it covers 370 stations. Lines are numbered 1-15 direction of which is indicated by the last station on the line. In order to reach a specified destination it might be necessary to change lines although this does not involve purchasing of additional tickets.

The RER trains extend public transport to the suburbs of Paris. The five lines A-E operate from about five thirty in the morning till about half past midnight (like the Metro) and Metro tickets can be used when travelling inside Paris. For travels outside the Paris area, such as to the airport and Disneyland Paris, special RER fares and tickets apply.

For a more entertaining journey try the Paris bus system; this offers better views of the city and makes it easier to get accustomed to the city layout. Maps indicating bus routes are available at bus shelters as well as the Metro stations. Buses generally function from 6:30 am till 8:30 pm with a few extending their services till past mid-night. Metro tickets can be used to travel in the buses as well.

Tickets for the Metro, bus and RER can be purchased at subway stations, bus terminals and registered retailers displaying the RATP sign, and a booklet of ten offers a good saving. And although using the Metro requires only one ticket the bus would require more than one depending on the number of stages of the journey. Special buses such as the Noctambus or the Roissybus have higher fares and ticket for these busses can be purchased only on the specific bus. A Paris Visite, a special pass, offers an unlimited number of trips on all types of Parisian public transport. So for those who wish to travel around a lot using the public transport system, this would be the best option.

A taxi is a good option if you are pressed for time or if privacy is preferred. Otherwise it’s not the most convenient option as it’s difficult to just hail one on the street. Taxis are generally found in multitudes outside train stations and airports and outside restaurants and nightclubs in the evenings. Taxis charge additional fees at train station ramps, for extra luggage and even for a fourth passenger.

A Paris L’Open bus tour is an easy way to see the city. It provides commentaries in English and French and offers the flexibility of descending and ascending the next bus when the passenger is ready to continue with the journey. The full journey lasts two hours fifteen minutes and Paris Visite cardholders receive a discount.

Lastly, avoid the Metro and the RER during the rush hour: 8:00-10:00am and 5:00-8:00pm. Best option is to walk as even some bus lines can get really crowded. The most over crowded Metro lines are 1,2,4,11,12 and 13 and Metro lines 6 and 2 offer an added advantage of impressive views of the city as they run mostly above ground.

They don’t call it the ‘city that never sleeps’ for nothing. Nightlife in New York accommodates every taste – even the craziest, and the number of options available can actually be overwhelming. From bars for smokers to Burlesque Shows to trendy dive bars, the city has it all.

With a collection of offerings ranging from hip-hop to house to punk, New York is probably the best city to spend the night dancing away. Some of the hottest dance clubs in the city include Cielo, providing soulful house music and various genres of electronic in the Meatpacking District, the club is built for dancing and boasts an impressive sound system, and Touch, a 12,000 square foot, three level high-end design dance venue on 52nd Street.

A growing attraction in New York City, several establishments host travelling Burlesque troupes. These nights filled with music, dance, song and humour are generally not scheduled in advance and it’s always better to check in advance to make sure the event is actually taking place. Venues famous for Burlesque are, Public Assembly at 70 North 6th Street with a 4,000 square foot area which features various events with Burlesque on Monday nights and the Slipper Room, 167 Orchard Street, featuring a variety of performances including Burlesque and sketch comedy.

Enjoy cheaper drinks in shabby surroundings at the dive bars which have become the modern trend. Featuring a kind of shabbiness that is really desirable, especially if the mood calls for it, there are many of this sort in New York. Surviving over 50 years, the Billymark’s West, 9th Avenue, is probably the original dive bar in the city. Try the notoriously anonymous Alibi Club in Brooklyn for dirt cheap drinks or for the ‘diviest’ experience try the Montero’s Bar and Grill in Brooklyn.

Being the jazz capital of the world, New York boasts some of the best jazz venues. Jazz at Lincoln Center, 60th Street, is a world-renowned arts organisation dedicated to Jazz. It features a comprehensive array of guest artists performing at varied events. Originally the hotbed of jazz the Birdland has now re-emerged in Midtown Manhattan with some of the best jazz on the planet, featuring some of the best known in the field. For pitch perfect jazz by world-class performers, in a warm, comfortable atmosphere try the Jazz standard, 27th Street.

In case you are venturing out in New York all by your self, the city is brimming with singles and there are exclusive singles’ hangout joints. The Long Island City Lic Bar is a classis New York watering hole with a friendly atmosphere and allows dogs and smoking. The Last Exit on Atlantic Avenue is a classic example of Brooklyn’s vibrant night scene featuring weekly live performances and an outdoor garden. Some other hot spots for singles include the roof top at the Delancey, The Larry Lawrence, Grand Street, and the gastro-pub style music venue, the White Rabbit.

Late night dining – the excitement, the booze, the energetic dancing is sure to leave you exhausted and hungry. For a late bite try the Coffee Shop, 16th Street, for a range of diner food and fine Brazilian, stuffed delicatessen sandwiches at the Carnegie Deli, 55th Street, or Tom’s Restaurant for a range of dinner specials in a friendly atmosphere.

Luring thousands of visitors every year, the Phuket Island in Thailand boasts a tropical monsoon climate. With irresistible scenic beauty, unforgettable hospitality and excellent cuisine it makes a lovely holiday destination. Its monsoon climate ensures warm weather throughout the year with ample showers.

The best time to visit Phuket, and its busiest time, would be from late October until early April. The weather during this time is quite mild – it’s less humid with a cool breeze due to the north-east monsoon, and the beach conditions are ideal for diving and sailing. Average temperature during this time is 24 to 32 degrees Celsius.

During September and October Phuket experiences the wettest season but its also a great time to visit in order to avoid the crowds and also to get good discounted rates for lodging, as there is plenty of beautiful sunny periods between the heavy rains – typical monsoon!

Phuket features exotic festivals and events spread out through the year. Most are rather bizarre but certainly full of fun and entertainment. Some of the events lined up for the year 2010 are:

Chinese New Year, February 14th 2010 – Vibrant celebrations and ear splitting firecrackers are in store to cheer the Year of the Dog in. Visitors can experience local customs, colourful processions and great shopping bargains as the Chinese community in Phuket prepares for their most important festival of the year. Old Sino, the Portuguese quarter of Phuket also lights up with lively Dragon Procession and other forms of entertainment. Being very popular for its cuisine, this season highlights the popular traditional fare.

April 13th – 15th, 2010 – enjoy the Songkran Festival when the Thailand celebrates its traditional Thai New Year. Very much an outdoor festival, it features plenty of boisterous water throwing. The age-old tradition of sprinkling water on the hand to wish good luck has, in the recent years, been transformed to an exciting festival involving a lot of water throwing, by bucketfuls, at each other

Enjoy the colouful Phuket Vegetarian Festival during late September and early October. Usually held over a period of nine days this celebrates the Chinese community’s belief of abstaining from meat, during the ninth lunar month, for better health and peace of mind. The festival involves a range of street entertainment, parades and lots of sacred rituals. Chinese shrines and temples feature aesthetic displays of self-mortification rituals performed by devotees.

The night of November 21st boasts one of the most beautiful and mystical festivals, the Loy Kratong Festival. Believed to have originated in Sukhothai about 800 years ago, the festival involves thousands of lights floating on every expanse of water. A festival adored by children, it is believed to bring good fortune for those who partake in it.

Of course there is much more happening in Phuket every year, throughout the year, be it festivals or seasonal events and they suit all visitors of all ages. And even if it’s a short stay where there is no ‘festival’ as such, there is always the exotic beauty of Phuket Island and delectable Thai cuisine to indulge in.

A legendary city with a history spanning over 20 centuries, Lisbon has been Portugal’s capital since its conquest from the moors in 1147. The legendary Alfama, the oldest quarter of the city, still boasts its original layout along with Castelo and Mouraria. These traditional quarters, set on a hill on the banks of Tagus River, with their cobble stoned streets which are a delight to explore, old churches and fascinating architecture, offers an exotic atmosphere.

With spring-like winters and summers mellowed by the gentle breeze from the Atlantic, Lisbon is a year round holiday destination. And apart from the old city with its gothic cathedrals, monuments, monasteries and museums, Lisbon is well known for its popular festivals, exquisite shopping and its exciting night life.

The main monumental attraction in Lisbon, the Castelo de Sao Jorge (Saint George’s Castle) portrays the early history of the city. Offering a spectacular panoramic view of Lisbon this castle was built by the Visigoths in the 5th century and was expanded in the 9th century by the Moors.

Some of the other interesting historical monuments include the Aqueduto das Aguas Livres (Aqueduct of the Free Waters) an aqueduct, consisting of 109 arches spread across the valley, built in the 18th century by the order of King Joao V. One of Lisbon’s most fascinating churches, the Basilica da Estrela (Estrela Basilica) was built in the 18th century and was dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Casa dos Bicos (House of the Pointed Stones) is a 16th century construction with an unusual pointed frontal design.

Lisbon boasts a wide variety of museums such as the National Art Museum with its vast collection of paintings, sculptures, drawings, jewellery and furniture from the 12th to the 19th century and also portrays Europen, African and Oriental art and the Folk Art Museum with its collection of regional Portuguese art and craft. The Chiado Museum, or the National Museum of Contemporary Art, is located in the heart of the city and it holds the most significant Portuguese contemporary art collection. For those interested in fashion design the National Costume Museum exhibits over 30,000 costumes from different periods including those from the 14th to the 19th centuries.

Apart from the old city and the cobble stoned maze of streets and amazing architectural structures Lisbon also offers great shopping options. Malls of varied sizes adorn the city and there is a section of the city solely for shopping. The Rossio, the Augusta Street, the Chiado and the Liberdade Avenue are the main areas for shopping. Other traditional areas for shopping are Avenida de Roma, Alvalade and Campo de Ourique.

As for shopping malls, the largest mall in the Iberian Peninsula, Colombo offers a range of national as well as international ware. The El Corte Ingles, a large department store, offers many famous brands. But for a real Portuguese experience try the Flea Market in Campo de Santa Clara. Open on Tuesdays and Saturdays its one of the oldest markets in Lisbon and visitors can either buy or exchange goods.

The region’s cuisine adds to the Portuguese experience. Known for its sea food such as fresh bass, oysters, clams and cockle, and typical regional specialties made of goat and sheep cheese, are sure to satisfy the gastronomic needs of all visitors. Other specialties include pastries from Malveira, ‘zimbros’ from Sesimbra and ‘queijadas’ from Sintra. Don’t miss out on the famous ‘muscatel’ wine from Setubal, and Portuguese country specialties such as grilled sardines and fish soups and local custard pies.

A testament to Magaluf’s popularity is the fact that it is visited by 1,000,000 discerning tourists every single year. Now that is truly saying something about this inimitable island. One sure attraction is that out of the 365 days of the year, Magaluf promises at least 300 days of blissful sunshine. Yet there are far more attractions that are present in Magaluf which are adored by thousands upon thousands of visitors annually.

Magaluf is situated amongst the municipality of Calvia and it is within reach of both Palma Nova and Torrenova. This would mean that this locale is ideally within reach of many Hotels in Magaluf. Hotels in this location are truly versatile and convenient with a host of modish amenities on offer.

Any decent visitor to Magaluf will have you know that it is immediately a fantastic place for dancing and partying your cares away. It would be an understatement to mention that there are many clubs and pubs here in this locale. World famous DJs such as the Freemasons, DJ Sammy, Greg James and Judge Jules just to name a few, are found to be rocking the club scene annually. The place to be is the Punta Ballena strip, which is famed for its party cum night life. Places such as the Poco Loco, Goodfellows and Benny Hills have to be visited without fail.

But it’s not only the debonair couples and singles that can have all the fun. The entire family is catered to as well. So many attractions are on offer that truly does have the interest of the family at heart. There are 2 water parks, a bungee rocket, go kart racing, jet skiing, horseback riding, scuba diving and a chance to visit the Isle de Porassa which is also known as the Black Lizard Island which is located at the centre of the famed Magaluf Bay. Another notable attraction is the Home of Kathmandu which is a nearby attraction. Likewise there are many attractions in Palma which is a noteworthy place to visit along with the unique Hotels in Palma.

The fun does not stop abruptly here. There are still many more places to visit such as for example the Pirates Dinner Adventure Show. Then there is the Slingshot and The Casino for some grown up fun. What is truly unique about the attractions is the versatility and diversity of them all. Another must visit is the Marineland.

A useful distance to remember would be 17 kms. That would ideally be the approximate distance from Palma de Mallorca to Magaluf. Palma de Mallorca itself is a destination that has its own set of attractions. Likewise, even Majorca like Magaluf has its own festivals and events and unique calling card when it comes to the tourist aspect. As accommodation is an important point in any location, it goes without saying that the Hotels in Majorca are truly exceptional. Keeping in mind that Magaluf is close at hand, Majorca is a highly recommended visit.

As a point of reference, it would be prudent to note that resorts which are in close proximity to Magaluf include the Palma Nora resort, the Santa Posa and the Cala Magos resorts.

There you have it – all the places and spots that should be visited if one is to venture into this beatific destination. Boasting a culture, heritage and history that are truly magnificent, Magaluf is a place where passion and fun reigns supreme. If the entire globe was regarded as a human body, Magaluf in Majorca could be singled out for being the heart and soul. Words truly cannot elucidate how this is so, a visit to this location would however indubitably show you why.

With the first golf club opening in 1964, Majorca has become a golfing tourist destination that makes people sit up and pay attention. The first golf course which is the Son Vida Golf Club found in close proximity to Palma has a heritage like no other. Ever since golf was born in this island, the proper sporting authorities have nurtured it well. Now there are golf courses that amount to over 15 throughout this island paradise.

Even if one is not a fan of golf as such, you are guaranteed to become one when visiting Majorca. There is the famous Golf School of Michael Monnardiv, who is a legend in his own right. Offering state of the art equipment and facilities to facilitate a proper training session, this school is sure to garner that latent golfing talent from within any tourist. The teachers and tutorials on offer are exceptional with professionalism being the key word. You are guaranteed to appreciate the value of money well spent. One should also note that many of the Hotels in Majorca are also in close proximity there by offering absolute conveneience of travel.

There are a wide variety of golf courses that one could enjoy playing. Whilst there are over 15 as mentioned previously, some of the more famous ones are as follows: Capdepera Golf, Canyamel Golf, Pula Golf, Son Servera Golf, Vall D’Or Golf, Son Antem West, Son Antem East, Maioris Golf, Son Gual, Golf Park, Son Quint Golf and Son Vida Golf.

As some tourists would have you believe, golfing they say is a sure fire way of seeing the entire island for what it truly is. A paradise. Consequently, Majorca is also well known for many of its destination inland. For example besides the chance to play golf, it is also well advised to enjoy the delectable cuisine and partake in the numerous festivals that are part and parcel of this island. There are also many hotels in the area, but some of the most well known hotels are the Palma Hotels which are capable as any other hotel in the area to facilitate your desire for a golfing expedition.

Whilst hotels do provide golfing facilities, there are other third party companies that specialise in providing for a golfing expedition. What makes a company such as this more attractive is that this is the sole service they provide. One must also state that they are well versed in this art of tailor making the ideal holiday for golf playing. One such company would be the Mallorca Golf Connection which can organize a golfing expedition that is sure to be memorable.

Since it is a company specialized in golfing company specialist, they do offer a plethora of benefits no one else can. For example, they are capable of offering and arranging tee off times all at the substantially discounted rate from the listed rate. Even when it comes to matters of convenience, they are very accommodating. What this means is that they would offer transport whether it be car or coach. To make that golfing holiday truly realistic, such companies also offer a presentation night where you just might be winning a trophy to immortalize that great game you played.

All in all, there are many avenues one can pursue in order to get the best for your money when it comes to making that perfect golfing package holiday. Whether it is in Palma or elsewhere, there are hotels and specialist companies that are in tune with offering that chance at a memorable experience. Even if one considers a destination such as Magaluf, there are even Magaluf Hotels and companies that offer the perfect golfing holiday. All you have to do in consider planning and visiting this golf haven for a chance at a lifetime.
