What to look for in the best external hard drive
Today we keep more than ever on our hard disks: passwords, work, digital photos, even home movies.
Is our data safe on our hard disks? Not really, hard drives have many moving parts and are therefore vulnerable to break downs. On top of that they can also be damaged physically, by for instance fire or flood, or by malicious software.
Clearly what everyone needs is a reliable, easy way to backup their files. I suppose you could backup your data to DVD or an USB flash drive. But only an external hard drive has both the speed and capacity that you need. Using either a package that you bought or the software that came with your drive, you can setup your system in such a way that your data are backed up, regularly and automatically.
eSATA external hard drives:
The bus to a standard hard drive has always been a bottle neck, slowing connection to your disk drive. Running at twice the speed of a conventional USB or Firewire connection the eSATA bus will give you the fastest connection to your external hard drive. The problem is that this only works with newer PCs. So check your motherboard booklet to see if your PC supports eSATA. If it does I recommend going for an eSATA hard drive.
Wireless external hard drives:
Another option is a wireless hard drive. The best thing about this is that you can put it anywhere in your house and everyone can use it.
Your hard drives speed:
A hard drive’s speed is measures in RPM(revolutions per minute) a fast drive rotates at 7,200 RPM. There are also 5,200 RPM drives on the market. They are fairly fast, but more reasonably priced.

Disk Space
The maximum size of an external hard drive is currently 2 TB(Terabytes). The size that you get really depends on your needs.
Personally I have a laptop and a computer at home. They are connected with a wireless network and files from both devices are backed up to my 500 Gig external hard drive every 2 weeks.
