Favre in Purple?
He is one of the major greats. His career passing yardage tops 65,000. He has 169 successful games. He’s thrown 464 scoring passes. And he’s been one of the healthiest players in any pro game and especially in the NFL. He has announced the end of his career and retracted that. For human interest, the press love to report on him. So do the supporters; no other player has put more wholesale jerseys in fans’ sports closets than the famous number four, Brett Favre. When he was the QB of Wisconsin’s Packers for 16 long years, the stands sometimes appeared as if jersey wholesalers had sold out every other jersey number.
He’s still making headlines. When his tenure in Wisconsin finished in 2007, Favre was sent packing to the New York Jets. The deal was an unhappy break-up, but Favre was met in New York with delirious acceptance. On the day of the statement that he would lead the Jets, more wholesale jerseys with Favre’s number on them were snapped up than in the preceding several months collectively. He started successfully with the Jets, but a muscle tear hobbled him and he announced his retirement again. An operation on his right shoulder would follow.
But all the while his heart was returning to the Midwest. He had made no secret of his desire to play for the Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay’s chief nemesis. And intermittent discussions with Minnesota proceeded during the spring of 2009. By May, rumors were abounding that he’d be quarterbacking the Purple, but nothing was set in stone. Media reported that it was either a finalized contract or still in the works or kaput. Jersey wholesalers had either begun to get ready to sell jersey #4 in purple, or no one had given consent for that yet. Vikings fans would either show up in wholesale jerseys with the former rival Favre on their backs or go back once again to their inexperienced line-up of unknown quarterbacks.
The fact that Green Bay and Favre were equivalent to the Vikings’ cheesehead rivals did not seem to dim the Minnesota fans’ eagerness for greeting Favre with a purple jersey. Some see the whole saga as a unhappy account of an extraordinarily great athlete who figure out how to end gracefully and so one of the amazing careers in sports history will end in disarray. Others think Favre will still live up to his own legend.
As of right now, it seems that an agreement between Favre and the purple is almost certain, depending only upon whether the repaired shoulder recovers enough to allow him to throw the long bomb. Favre has started working out and he reports that the shoulder is “okay” but says “okay” is not good enough for the NFL. Keep your eye on this one!
