London: the Home of English Football
London is the centre of many things in the United Kingdom – its bustling business centre, its myriad tourist attractions and its top quality restaurants have people heading to the capital for all sorts of reasons. Sports fans are also attracted to London, none more so than football fans eager to watch one of the 13 professional teams located within the city.
Five of these sides currently play in the Premiership – with Arsenal and Chelsea consistently at the top end of the table. Tottenham are again beginning to challenge with the best clubs after a spell of mediocrity while West Ham and Fulham also compete against the country’s best teams.
Travellers to London should have no trouble getting to any of the stadiums. The tube allows people to swiftly move from one side of the city to another, and all major stadiums are close to at least one stadium. The tube gets very busy before kick off and after full time but there are also many bus routes to help people out.
Tickets for big games – for example when Liverpool or Manchester United visit – can often be scarce and you may need to be a member of a supporter’s club or a season ticket holder to stand a chance of getting a ticket at face value. Smaller league games, or early cup rounds, are easier to get tickets for although advance planning may be required in some cases.
The average capacity for a London based Premiership team is around the 40,000 mark – with Arsenal’s stadium boasting more than 60,000 seats. With so many people passionately following their team, the atmosphere can be intense and many people enjoy going to matches purely for that side of the experience.
As well as club football, London offers visitors the chance to watch the national team in the newly constructed Wembley Stadium. Wembley is known throughout the world and football fans are offered the chance to walk around the ground, visit the museum and even walk out onto the pitch. The 90,000 seater stadium is used for England’s home matches as well as important domestic games such as the FA Cup final and music concerts.
With so much to offer on the sporting calendar, many people visit London to watch football. While some will only stay for a short while, others will make the stay permanent by requesting the services of a Fulham estate agent or a letting agent near Chelsea to make sure they’re as close to their favourite ground as possible.
